China firmly rejected U.S. threats to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports—raising the total to 104%—stating on Wednesday that it will not yield to American pressure.
The statement came from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Xian during a press briefing held in Beijing, in response to a question from Anadolu Agency regarding Beijing’s stance on President Donald Trump’s latest move in the ongoing trade dispute.
“China strongly opposes any attempt to harm its sovereignty, security, or developmental interests, and it will not succumb to any form of pressure,” Lin said.
He stressed that Beijing prefers dialogue and mutual understanding to resolve trade disagreements but is ready to take countermeasures if necessary. Lin also urged Washington to return to the negotiating table on the basis of mutual respect.
This development follows Trump’s announcement of increased tariffs as part of his administration’s efforts to reduce the U.S. trade deficit and promote domestic manufacturing.
