Bangladesh: Death toll in labour law protests rises to 39

Bangladeshi police officials confirmed on Friday that 39 people had been killed and hundreds injured, mostly in protests in the capital Dhaka.

The country has seen internet service disruptions, measures to restrict access to social media sites and the blocking of Bangladesh-related news websites.
The protesters are demanding an end to the quota system introduced by Sheikh Hasina’s government, which allocates 56 per cent of government jobs to certain demographic groups, including the families of war veterans who fought in the 1971 war of independence.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the deaths of students who died during the protests.
