The funeral of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement, began early Thursday morning in the Iranian capital Tehran, with a large number of people and officials in attendance, including Iranian President Masoud Bazeshkian, according to local media.
Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency published a short video clip of the funeral ceremony, which was attended by a number of senior Hamas figures.
Iranian leader Ali Khamenei will lead the funeral prayers, according to the official IRNA news agency.
On Wednesday morning, Hamas and Iran announced the assassination of Haniyeh in an Israeli air strike on his residence in Tehran after he attended the inauguration ceremony of new Iranian President Masoud Bazeshkian.
