Libyan Council of State to elect new president tomorrow

Libyan media sources reported today, Monday, that the elections for the Presidency of the Libyan Council of State and the members of the Executive Office will take place tomorrow, Tuesday 6 August.
Sources within the Libyan State Council confirmed that the most prominent candidates for the presidency of the council are: (Khaled Ammar al-Mishri, Mohamed Tekala and Adel Karmous).

The sources also reported that the candidates for the position of first deputy are: (Abu Obeida Mohammed, Masoud Abed, Abdulmuttalib Bakkas, Shukri al-Amin and Naji Mukhtar).

The candidates for the second deputy position are (Khaled al-Nazouri, Omar Khaled al-Obeidi, Musa Faraj).

According to the Council’s internal regulations, elections for the post of Chairman of the High State Council are held once a year. The Council of State was established by members of the General National Congress (the former parliament) as part of the Skhirat Agreement, which resulted from the political dialogue organised by the UN mission in 2014 and 2015, as an advisory body within a legislative chamber with the House of Representatives, and the agreement requires the two chambers to consult and coordinate when issuing important laws and decisions.
