Chinese state media reported that Typhoon Bebinka, which arrived in Shanghai on Monday, brought strong winds and heavy rains.
City authorities issued a red alert, a high state of alert, prompting the evacuation of some residents in coastal areas.
The typhoon hit the coastal area of Lingang New City, east of the city, early Monday morning, according to the China Meteorological Administration.
Authorities advised the city’s 25 million residents not to leave their homes, and all flights at Shanghai’s two major airports were canceled.
Nine thousand people were reportedly evacuated from Chongming Island, which lies at the mouth of the Yangtze River.
