Ukraine: 12 people injured by Russian shelling in Kharkiv

Twelve people have been injured in Russian shelling of the city of Kharkiv in north-eastern Ukraine.

According to local authorities, the Russian shelling targeted three neighbourhoods in Kharkiv, injuring 12 people, including seven women, and causing power cuts.

Residential complexes, garages, petrol stations, houses and cars have been damaged,’ Ukrainian police said on Telegram as rescue workers worked at the damaged sites.

Kharkiv’s regional governor, Oleg Sinigubov, and the city’s mayor, Igor Terekhov, confirmed on Telegram that there had been a power cut in ‘part’ of the city.

The shelling comes at a time when Ukrainian authorities fear a new campaign of Russian attacks on the country’s civilian energy infrastructure, as happened in the winter of 2022 and 2023.
In a related development, the Ukrainian army announced on Monday that air defence units had repelled a new Russian air attack on the capital Kiev overnight.
