Somalia expels Ethiopian diplomat from its territory

The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday in a statement that diplomat Ali Mohamed Aden is an ‘undesirable person’ in the country for ‘engaging in activities that contradict his diplomatic duties’, without clarifying what those activities are or what the diplomat’s duties are.

The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked Aden to leave the country within 72 hours of receiving the letter.
Relations between the two neighbours have deteriorated since Ethiopia signed an agreement with Somaliland on 1 January 2023, granting Addis Ababa permission to use the Red Sea coastline for commercial and military purposes.
Somalia rejected the agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, describing it as ‘illegal, a threat to good neighbourliness and a violation of its sovereignty’.

It recalled its ambassador from Ethiopia following the announcement of the agreement.
