Two Yemeni officials referred to court on charges of wasting $180 million

The Public Prosecution in Yemen has referred officials from the Aden Refinery to the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of damaging public funds and wasting $180 million by facilitating an unnecessary project to build a new power plant.
The prosecution clarified that the proposed project, which was meant to expand the refinery’s capacity, was not urgently needed and imposed a significant financial burden on the refinery.
In response, Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak stated that his government has implemented reforms in the energy sector, achieving savings of around 45%. He emphasized that combating corruption has become a top priority.
The government also confirmed that it continues to review the work of public institutions and refers corruption-related cases to the prosecution, in line with efforts to implement the financial and administrative reforms required by donor countries.
