Brazil Reinstates Visa Requirement for U.S., Canadian, and Australian Travelers Starting Today

The Brazilian government has officially reinstated visa requirements for travelers from the United States, Canada, and Australia starting Thursday, ending a six-year policy of visa-free entry.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision is based on the principle of reciprocity, as these countries continue to require visas from Brazilian nationals—despite Brazil waiving such requirements in 2019 under former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Under the new system, travelers from the three countries must now apply for an electronic visa (eVisa) through the official platform before entering Brazil, at a cost of approximately USD 81. The visa allows for stays of up to 90 days per year, with the possibility of renewal.

In 2024, Brazil welcomed nearly 730,000 American tourists, 96,000 Canadians, and 52,000 Australians. Analysts suggest that the new rule could impact tourist inflow, but also underscores Brazil’s sovereign stance on immigration and border policy.

The Ministry of Tourism stated that negotiations are ongoing with the United States to waive visa requirements for Brazilian citizens in the future, which could, in turn, lead to a reevaluation of the current measures.
