Tunisia is preparing for the local council elections set for December 24, 2023, less than a week away.

The elections will result in the selection of members for the Higher Councils of Regions and Provinces (The parliament’s second chamber).

2155 seats in the local councils are being competed for by candidates.

These councils will then elect the regional councils, who are responsible for forming the provincial councils to establish the Higher Council of Regions.

In order to form 279 local councils, elections will be held in 2085 municipalities, matching the number of regions in Tunisia’s provinces, which totals 24.

The Independent High Authority for Elections in Tunisia confirmed that the total number of candidates for the local elections is 7205.
