Preliminary election results: Leftist candidate wins Mexico’s presidency

Preliminary results from Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE) show that left-wing governing candidate Claudia Sheinbaum won the presidential election in which Mexicans voted yesterday.
The 61-year-old Sheinbaum won 57.8% of the vote against 29.1% for centre-right former senator Xochitl Galvez, according to the INE.
Mexico’s ruling party declared Claudia Sheinbaum the winner of the presidential election after the polls closed on Sunday 2 June 2024, becoming the country’s first female president.
