French authorities have announced the evacuation of the Basel-Melrose-Fribourg airport on the border between France and Switzerland for “security reasons”.
Flights to and from the airport have been “temporarily” suspended for the same reason, the airport authority said in a statement on Friday.
The evacuation and suspension of the airport comes hours after the French railway company said it had been hit by “sabotage” on the first day of the Olympic Games in Paris, causing disruption and major delays to high-speed train services.
The Summer Olympics kick off in Paris on Friday for the third time since 1900 and 1924, with the opening ceremony taking place on the River Seine.
