The body of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh will be laid to rest in Qatar on Friday .

The coffin arrived in Doha on Thursday afternoon and the Qatari authorities took strict measures to secure the funeral of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in the Iranian capital Tehran.

Long queues formed since nightfall at Hamad International Airport in the capital Doha to attend the funeral, which will be attended by officials from many countries.

Some main and secondary roads in Doha were closed to traffic amid tight police security measures, especially in and around the Mohammed bin Abdul Wahab Mosque, where funeral prayers will be held after Friday prayers.

A large number of journalists from local and international media outlets were present at the mosque to cover the funeral.

Haniyeh was assassinated on Wednesday at his residence in Tehran after attending the inauguration ceremony of Masoud Pazeshkian as president of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
