Former Defense Minister Elected Leader of Japan’s Ruling Party

Former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba won the leadership election of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) today Friday, virtually guaranteeing that he will become the country’s next prime minister.

With the LDP-led coalition holding a majority in both houses of parliament, the new party leader will almost certainly be elected prime minister at an extraordinary parliamentary session scheduled for 1 October , succeeding incumbent Fumio Kishida.
