Former Peruvian president Toledo sentenced to 20 years in prison for corruption

A court in Lima on Monday sentenced former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo, 78, to more than 20 years in prison for corruption and money laundering in the Odebrecht scandal.
Toledo, who ruled the country from 2001 to 2006, was sentenced to 20 years and 6 months in prison after the court found him guilty of taking tens of millions of dollars in bribes from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht in exchange for public contracts.
The US extradited Toledo to Peru to face trial in April 2023.

Prosecutors accused Toledo of receiving tens of millions of dollars from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht, which is at the centre of a massive scandal in South America involving bribes in exchange for public contracts.
