Brazil: Armed forces to secure G20 summit

Brazil’s Eastern Military Command has announced that a number of Brazilian naval, army and air force units will be deployed to secure the G20 summit of world leaders on 18-19 November.
. The operation will be carried out in cooperation with the state government, the mayor’s office and various public security agencies and bodies.

The army will contribute around 7,500 troops who will carry out activities such as escorting authorities, securing the summit perimeter, protecting critical infrastructure, patrolling roads and strategic areas, counter-terrorism, electronic warfare, cyber defence and air defence.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva had previously ordered the use of the armed forces to maintain law and order in Rio de Janeiro during the G20 summit.

Some 60 foreign delegations, including more than 40 heads of state, are expected to attend, requiring a high level of coordination to complement and integrate the authorities’ security and protection efforts.
