COP29: Talks push for $1 trillion a year for poorest countries

Negotiators at the United Nations climate change conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan warned on Thursday that money must be raised now to help the poorest countries cope with climate change, to avoid paying more later.

Experts say poor countries need at least $1 trillion a year by the end of the decade to switch to cleaner energy sources and protect themselves from extreme weather.
Finance is a key focus of talks at the United Nations climate change conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan, and the success of the summit is likely to be judged on whether countries can agree a new target for the money that rich countries, development lenders and the private sector must provide each year to developing countries to help cover the costs of climate action.
