G20 Summit: Final communiqué calls for ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon and for global crises to be addressed

G20 leaders meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday issued a joint statement highlighting the crises in Gaza, Lebanon and Ukraine and stressing the importance of international cooperation to address global challenges.

The statement addressed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, expressing “grave concern about the dire humanitarian situation” and calling for increased humanitarian assistance, protection of civilians and a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon.

The leaders of the world’s leading industrialised and emerging economies also expressed their commitment to more effective taxation of the super-rich and reaffirmed the agreed international goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The G20 was able to agree a joint statement containing 85 points.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced the launch of the ‘Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty’ at the start of the G20 Summit in Rio. The initiative is one of the main themes of Brazil’s presidency of the G20, which brings together the world’s largest economies, and is publicly supported by 81 countries.
