Brazilian president proposes ‘climate change council’ within the United Nations

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has proposed the creation of a ‘climate change council’ within the United Nations to promote the fight against climate change.
The council would bring together different actors and mechanisms within the UN to promote the fight against climate change, the Brazilian president said in a speech on Tuesday during a session on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
He added that it was unreasonable for rich countries to expect other countries to be more careful without assuming their historical responsibility.

He stressed that his country aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 59-67 per cent by 2035.
Da Silva called on developed countries to implement greenhouse gas reduction programmes in all their production sectors.
He stressed that his country would not compromise on environmental crimes and that deforestation in the Amazon would be eliminated by 2030.
