Georgian PM Vows Crackdown as Protests Escalate Over Election Dispute

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili pledged decisive legal measures today, December 3, 2024, against the organizers of ongoing protests in Tbilisi. The protests erupted after the Constitutional Court dismissed the opposition’s request to annul the results of October’s parliamentary elections, which were won by the ruling Georgian Dream party amid allegations of fraud.

Garibashvili accused the opposition of seeking to destabilize the country and rejected their demands for a re-run of the elections. Meanwhile, protesters continue to demand democratic reforms and stronger ties with the European Union.

International actors, including the EU and the US, have called for restraint and urged dialogue to address the escalating political tensions in Georgia.
