Michel Barnier’s government, which lasted only 91 days, has fallen after the French Parliament voted by a majority to withdraw confidence from it.
331 deputies voted to censure Barnier’s government, surpassing the required majority of 288 votes.
The vote was supported by a coalition of the far right and far left, marking a precedent in modern French history. It is the first time a government has been ousted by a motion of no confidence in 60 years.
The vote came after the government invoked Article 49.3 of the constitution to pass the social security budget without parliamentary voting.
