In a significant diplomatic meeting held in the Italian capital, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati discussed developments in Gaza and southern Lebanon, focusing on efforts to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire in both regions.
The two leaders emphasized the importance of regional and international cooperation to halt military actions and create conducive conditions for stability and peace. Abbas and Mikati also underscored the need for enhanced Arab collaboration to address shared challenges and urged Israel to comply with international legitimacy resolutions.
President Abbas stated, “A ceasefire in Gaza is a critical step toward achieving comprehensive peace and alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people,” while Mikati noted that “calm in southern Lebanon is closely linked to ending aggression in Palestinian territories, necessitating urgent international action.”
The meeting also explored ways to implement the United Nations Security Council’s resolution on Israel’s withdrawal from occupied territories, alongside plans for an international peace conference to be held mid-next year, with broad international participation, aimed at finding sustainable solutions to regional conflicts.
The meeting comes amid escalating tensions in Gaza and southern Lebanon and ongoing humanitarian suffering caused by military operations.
