In his first comment since leaving Syria and being evacuated to Russia, former President Bashar al-Assad stated that his departure was not planned.

He explained that his Russian allies decided to evacuate him from a base in western Syria after drone attacks targeted it.

Assad noted that he remained in the capital, Damascus, and carried out his duties until it fell into the hands of the opposition on December 8.
