Cyclone Chido struck the French island of Mayotte, resulting in at least 14 fatalities, according to French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who warned that the final death toll could be higher.

Mayotte is France’s poorest overseas territory, with its 350,000 inhabitants living in tin shacks and unstable structures that could not withstand the cyclone’s force.
