It is preparing to build the world’s largest airport on an artificial island, the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport, off the country’s northeast coast.
Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport will occupy a 20-square-kilometre island off the country’s northeast coast, with four runways and a 900,000-square-metre passenger terminal.
The airport will serve 80 million passengers a year with 540,000 flights.
According to CNN, the first phase is scheduled to open in 2035 and when completed will be the world’s largest airport on an artificial island, surpassing Hong Kong International Airport and Kansai Airport in Japan.
The site for the new airport was selected in 2003, but construction only began a few years ago.
China opened Beijing’s second airport on 1 October 2019, the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic, and officials said at the time that the country would need 450 airports by 2035 to keep up with demand.
