Zelensky Appoints Crimean Tatar Leader as Ambassador to Turkey After Imprisonment in Moscow

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Nariman Dzhelyal, a prominent Crimean Tatar politician, as Ukraine’s ambassador to Turkey.
Dzhelyal had been imprisoned in Russia for three years on charges related to terrorism, charges that human rights organizations deemed fabricated.
Dzhelyal is a leader of the Crimean Muslim minority and also serves as the vice president of the Crimean Tatar Council, which was banned by Russia after its annexation of the peninsula in 2014.
