The death toll from Typhoon Shidou in the French Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte has risen to 39, according to local authorities.

The French interior ministry said the number of injured had risen to 4,136, including 124 in serious condition.

Authorities in Mayotte said the process of identifying victims of the cyclone was continuing in coordination with local authorities and associations.

A field hospital with a maternity ward and two operating theatres has been opened in a stadium east of Mamoudzou. The facility is designed to receive 100 people a day for medical check-ups.
