Greece: Heavy rains cause disruption in Athens and Evia

The Greek capital, Athens, was inundated with water from continuous heavy rains, causing disruption in many parts of the country overnight and into Thursday morning.

Much of the trouble in the Greek capital was concentrated in the northern and southern suburbs, where the coastal road Poseidonos and other major roads were reportedly flooded.

Police were forced to divert vehicles after a section of flooded roads was closed.

Firefighters responded to dozens of calls for help pumping water out of basements and other properties.

On the island of Evia, authorities continued to closely monitor the Mesabus River, which runs through the centre of the island, after water levels rose on Wednesday evening.
