Senegal announces closure of foreign military bases

Senegal announced on Friday its decision to close all foreign military bases on its territory, without giving a timetable for the withdrawal of troops.

The President of the Republic has decided to close all foreign military bases in the near future,’ Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said in his policy statement to the National Assembly.

Senegal’s president, Baciro Diomaye Faye, has previously expressed his desire to end the presence of military bases. In a rare media interview, he said: ‘Senegal is a sovereign country and its sovereignty does not allow the presence of foreign military bases.
