Trump asks Supreme Court to delay implementation of TikTok ban

President-elect Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to delay the implementation of a law banning the Chinese social media platform TikTok in the United States.

Trump’s lawyer, John Sawyer, said in a statement on Friday that he had asked the Supreme Court to delay the law’s implementation date, which coincides with Trump’s inauguration.

The law requires TikTok to sell to a US company or be banned in the US.

US President Joe Biden’s administration accuses TikTok of giving Chinese authorities access to US users’ data.

Last year, President Biden signed a bill passed by Congress in March that would ban the platform, which has about 170 million users in the US, or sell it to a US company.

The platform has asked a US appeals court to overturn the law, arguing that it violates the freedom of expression enshrined in Article 1 of the US Constitution and the US’s ‘open internet’ policy.
