Former US President Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at the age of 100.
The Carter Centre said in a statement that Carter ‘died at his home in Plains, Georgia’ after a century of life.
The centre noted that Carter, ‘the longest-lived US president’, had been receiving care at home for more than a year.
Carter, the 39th president of the United States, won the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1976 and carried out diplomatic missions into his eighties.
President from 1977 to 1981, Carter was instrumental in shaping US foreign policy, including on sensitive issues such as the Middle East.
Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and was known for his efforts to achieve a two-state solution in Palestine.
