The two Libyan “6+6” committees have reached an agreement on the need to amend the country’s constitutional and legal framework to facilitate widely accepted presidential and parliamentary elections.
The announcement followed a two-day consultative meeting between representatives of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, held under the auspices of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), according to a statement released by the UN on Thursday.
The Joint Committee (6+6), formed by Libya’s rival legislative chambers, had previously drafted the electoral laws during negotiations in Bouznika, Morocco, in June 2023. However, several provisions of those laws faced rejection from key political factions, despite the committee’s insistence that the laws were “final and enforceable.”
The renewed discussions mark a step forward in Libya’s stalled political process, as the country continues to grapple with divisions that have delayed long-awaited national elections.
