A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s western coast on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, which said no tsunami warning was issued.
The agency said the quake occurred at 10:18 a.m. local time (01:18 GMT) in Shimane Prefecture, adding that the same area was later hit by several weaker aftershocks measuring 4.5, 5.1 and 3.8 in magnitude.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake measured 5.8 in magnitude.
