A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Chile’s northern Atacama region on Friday evening, causing power outages for more than 20,000 people but resulting in no reported injuries, according to authorities.
The National Seismological Center said the quake’s epicenter was located 54 kilometers south of the city of Diego de Almagro. Residents across the northern region reported feeling strong tremors.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric confirmed in a post on the social media platform X that “no injuries have been reported so far,” while emergency teams were dispatched to assess damage and monitor the situation.
Local media shared images showing shattered windows and partial wall collapses in the city of Copiapó, located roughly 800 kilometers north of the capital, Santiago.
Chile lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active zones, and frequently experiences significant earthquakes.
