A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Tonga islands in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, with no threat of a tsunami reported.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake occurred at a significant depth, reducing the likelihood of dangerous sea waves.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake had a depth of about 238 kilometers, while China’s earthquake network center estimated it at around 250 kilometers.
The USGS added that the epicenter was located more than 150 kilometers from the town of Neiafu in Tonga.
