85 U.N. Member States Condemn Israeli Measures in West Bank

Eighty-five U.N. member states on Tuesday issued a joint statement condemning new Israeli measures in the occupied West Bank, saying they aim to “expand Israel’s illegal presence” and warning of possible annexation of Palestinian land that could lead to a “demographic change.”

The statement followed Israeli decisions adopted over the past week, including measures facilitating land purchases by settlers and a cabinet decision on Sunday to accelerate land registration in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.

Signatories to the statement included France, China, Saudi Arabia and Russia, as well as organisations and blocs such as the European Union and the Arab League.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli government on the statement.
