A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of California today, Thursday, prompting authorities to issue a warning about the potential for tsunami waves.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located just 10 kilometers below the sea surface, about 100 kilometers west-southwest of the coastal city of Ferndale.
