The world’s largest pumped-storage hydropower plant, Fengning Pumped-Storage Hydropower Plant (PSHP), has started full operation in Chengde City, Hebei Province, North China.
Operated by China National Grid Corporation, the plant has a total installed capacity of 3.6 million kilowatts and a design capacity to generate 6.61 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
Since the first units were commissioned in 2021, approximately 8.62 billion kWh of electricity has been produced, the company said.
Pumped storage technology is one of the key pillars of renewable energy storage, which plays a pivotal role in supporting China’s green energy transition.
The company expects the Fengning plant to save 480,800 tonnes of standard coal and reduce CO2 emissions by 1.2 million tonnes per year, supporting national efforts to achieve energy efficiency and environmental sustainability goals.
