Conservatives led by Friedrich Merz won the legislative elections in Germany on Sunday, surpassing the far-right “Alternative for Germany” party, which achieved its best result in history.

Exit polls conducted by Germany’s first and second television channels showed a significant lead for the Christian Union in the parliamentary elections, followed by the “Alternative for Germany” party, which outperformed Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats and the Greens.
