Tropical Cyclone Alfred has begun affecting Australia’s eastern coast, bringing heavy rains and record waves to a densely populated area rarely hit by such storms.

Evacuation orders have been issued in some regions, schools are closed, and public transport is suspended.

The cyclone is expected to make landfall on Friday or early Saturday, with winds already causing power outages.
