The funeral of Pope Francis will be held next Saturday at 10:00 AM local time (08:00 GMT) in St. Peter’s Basilica Square in Rome, the Vatican announced on Tuesday, amid preparations for a large turnout of faithful and world leaders.
According to an official statement cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP), the pope’s coffin will be transferred after the funeral to Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, where he will be laid to rest in accordance with his last will and testament.
Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88, following a stroke, and his coffin will be on public display starting 7:00 AM Wednesday (GMT) in St. Peter’s Basilica, allowing mourners to pay their final respects.
The pope’s body is currently placed in a casket at the Chapel of Casa Santa Marta, where he had resided since his election in 2013.
Pope Francis made his final public appearance on Easter Sunday, where he appeared on the cathedral balcony, while still recovering from a severe bout of pneumonia that had recently affected his health.
