Rwanda and DR Congo Near Historic Peace Deal in Washington

Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe announced the nearing conclusion of a historic peace agreement with the Democratic Republic of Congo, following the signing of a “Declaration of Principles” in Washington under U.S. mediation.

Speaking at a press conference on April 25, 2025, Nduhungirehe emphasized the goal of the forthcoming deal: to end hostilities in eastern Congo, halt support for armed groups such as M23, and uphold mutual sovereignty through a joint security mechanism. The final agreement is expected to be signed in mid-June at the White House, in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump.

This move marks a critical milestone in promoting stability across the Great Lakes region, as global interest grows in the area’s critical mineral resources, particularly cobalt and tantalum.
