President Donald Trump has announced the launch of the “Golden Dome,” a comprehensive missile defense system designed to protect the United States from advanced missile threats, including those originating from space. The project, estimated to cost up to $175 billion, aims to be operational within three years.
“During the campaign, I promised the American people I would build a cutting-edge missile defense shield,” Trump stated at the White House. “Today, I am pleased to announce we have officially selected the architecture for this state-of-the-art system.”
The Golden Dome initiative draws inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome but is envisioned on a much larger scale, incorporating space-based interceptors, advanced radar systems, and laser weaponry to counter ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles. General Michael Guetlein of the U.S. Space Force has been appointed to oversee the project’s development.
Initial funding of $25 billion has been allocated, with the total cost potentially reaching $175 billion. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that expenses could escalate to between $161 billion and $542 billion over two decades, depending on the system’s complexity and scope.
The initiative has garnered interest from international partners, with Canada expressing a desire to participate in the program. However, the announcement has also elicited reactions from global powers. China, for instance, has voiced concerns over the potential escalation of an arms race in space.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the strategic importance of the Golden Dome, stating that it represents a significant advancement in national security and deterrence capabilities. Despite the ambitious nature of the project, critics have raised questions about its feasibility, cost, and the implications of weaponizing space.
