The European Union hopes to reach an agreement with the United States following new threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose a 30% tariff on the bloc, although its patience is beginning to wear thin, according to the EU’s chief negotiator and several European trade ministers in media statements.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said ahead of a meeting of the bloc’s trade ministers—intended to develop a strategy to counter the U.S. tariffs on European exports to the United States—“I intend to speak again with my American counterparts during the day (…) We must be prepared for all possibilities and take appropriate and measured steps, if necessary, to restore balance in our transatlantic relationship.”
