Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez arrived in Nouakchott on Wednesday for an official visit to Mauritania, his second in less than a year.
He was welcomed at the airport by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and senior members of the government.
While no official agenda has been announced, observers believe irregular migration will be a key topic, as Spain seeks deeper cooperation with Mauritania to curb migrant flows toward the Canary Islands.
According to a statement from the Mauritanian presidency, Sánchez is accompanied by a high-level delegation including several ministers, underlining the strategic importance of the talks.
Sánchez previously visited Nouakchott in August last year for discussions with President Ghazouani and other top officials.
