Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is expected to announce his resignation soon, local media reported Wednesday, following a major electoral defeat that cost the ruling coalition its majority in the upper house of parliament.
The loss means Ishiba’s government no longer holds a majority in either chamber, forcing it to negotiate with opposition parties to pass legislation—an uphill battle amid growing domestic challenges.
The election outcome reflects public dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of economic issues, including inflation and sluggish growth.
While no official resignation has been confirmed, sources close to the prime minister’s office say a formal announcement could come within days.
