Syria’s Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday that security forces had foiled a planned terrorist attack targeting a church in the western province of Tartus. Two individuals were arrested while attempting to carry out the bombing.
According to Colonel Abdel Aal Mohammed Abdel Aal, head of internal security in Tartus, the operation was based on precise intelligence indicating that a group affiliated with remnants of the former regime was preparing to detonate explosive devices inside Mar Elias Maronite Church, located in the village of Al-Khreibat in the Safita district.
The suspects were reportedly under surveillance and were apprehended before they could execute the attack. Authorities confirmed that further investigations are underway to uncover any additional links or accomplices.
The ministry emphasized its continued efforts to combat terrorism and protect religious sites and civilians across the country.
