India has signed a $7 billion contract to acquire 97 domestically designed and manufactured Tejas fighter jets, on the eve of retiring its decades-old Russian MiG-21 aircraft.
The first Tejas jets – whose name means “Radiance” in Hindi – entered service with the Indian Air Force in 2016.
The Indian Ministry of Defence stated that the deal with state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) covers 68 single-seat and 29 twin-seat aircraft, according to AFP.
