China Urges Citizens to Avoid Traveling to Japan Amid Taiwan Tensions

China has urged its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan amid diplomatic tensions sparked by remarks from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.

On November 7, Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female prime minister last month, told parliament that Tokyo might respond militarily to any use of force against Taiwan, which enjoys self-governance but is considered by China as part of its territory, according to AFP.

The two countries have exchanged criticisms over the issue. On Friday, Beijing summoned the Japanese ambassador to protest, while Tokyo called in the Chinese ambassador following an “inappropriate” online post by the Chinese Consul General in Osaka, which was later deleted.
