Russia has handed over the bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed in combat, Ukraine’s government agency for prisoners of war said on Thursday, marking one of the largest repatriations of remains since the war began nearly three years ago.

“The repatriation process took place today. Ukraine received 1,000 bodies which the Russian side said belonged to Ukrainian soldiers,” the government’s prisoner-of-war centre said in a statement on Telegram.

Ukrainian officials gave no further details about where or when the soldiers died.
